Legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was pronounced dead this morning.Paterno was diagnosed with lung cancer in November. Yesterday his family rushed to his side at the State College Hospital shortly before his passing. A representative for Paterno requested that he have time alone with his family.
Joe Paterno has won more Division I NCAA football games than any other coach. He built his career around the motto “success with honor.” Unfortunately his career ended as a result of the scandal involving former assistant Jerry Sandusky. Sandusky reportedly assaulted young boys on campus. Paterno was chastised due to his failure to report the incidents to the Police.
He died at age 85. He is survived by his wife Sue Paterno, children Diana, Joseph Jr., Mary Kay, David, and Scott.
The Paternos released a statement earlier today: “He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.”
